The Dreadnaughts enter spring practice with high anticipation and equally high expectations to improve in preparation for the up and coming 2008 season. Returning Offensive starters are Quarterback - Jarred Haggins, Running Backs - Jason Guzman and Ben McRoy, Wide Receiver - Javares McRoy, and Offensive Lineman - Brenton Clayton and Corey Swanson. On the Defensive side of the ball we will see returning starters Defensive Line - Deonate' Gary, Linebackers - Quayshawn Nealy and Jordan Jones, and Defensive Back - Laconia Blake.

Spring practices are being held at Bryant Stadium. The FHSAA has allotted all schools a total of twenty days to use at their discretion. The Naughts will start on May 1st and end their spring season on the 30th of May where they will take on Manatee High School at Manatee. The game is set to take place at 7:00pm. Tickets can be purchased on site the day of the game.

The bumps and bruises are starting to wear on my guys a bit. The first few days of full contact are usually the roughest. It takes about a full week for the players bodies to become calloused to the day to day banging. My group continues to show improvement from day to day and that is all I can ask for.

Friday was the first time this spring we were able to have extensive scrimmage time. Once again the secondary has shown that improvement is needed in tackling. Friday was a reality check for some of your younger players getting there first taste of varsity football. The secondary struggled with tackling consistently throughout the day. In the last three weeks of the spring we will make a commitment to improving our tackling. There maybe some drastic changes before the spring ends in the back four.

After a day off we got back at it on Thursday. The practice had a slower pace than the days before. Usually, the 3rd day of any training is one of the worst, but we have high hopes for Friday. Will Lucas continues to be very impressive. His combination of speed and explosiveness have all the coaches smiling and amazed.

The DB's are steadily improving. Yesterday may have been the most productive group practice I have been apart of with the Dreadnaught secondary. Highlighted by strong performances by Laconia Blake and TJ Denson on the corners. They have shown the ability to make plays in the pass game. Kareem Givens and Rodney Watson are showing lots of promise at the safety spots. They still have a lot to learn, but they are making tremendous strides everyday. Daryl Roberts is shown potential to be a guy that can step in at corner and keep the unit strong. We have to continue to try to develop capable backups and get more physical against the run.

I'm very pleased with all of my backs progress so far this spring. Ben McRoy has really improved on explosion to and through the line of scrimmage. His aggressiveness has improved greatly from last year. My second group of Running Backs, Brice Jones and Demarco Gandy, are starting to battle it out for playing time at the FB spot. Competition for positions is great for a coach to see. It breeds aspirations to be better and everyone feeds of off it. Its when there is no competition where progress and the elevation of play can be stagnant.

Tuesday brought more energy than in recent days from the Receivers. Playmakers are starting to emerge, but consistency from snap to snap is still an area that needs to improvement. Perimeter blocking needs improvement as shown in 1 on 1 drills early against the DB's, but later on i the day in 1 on 1 passing drills we rebounded and it carried over into the pass skeleton and 11 on 11 periods.

Just finished the last day in shorts. We are 85 strong and growing. Most kids are hustling around and learning the ropes. Offensively the young Naughts have lots of learning to do. We are coming back with two QB's that played last year: Chuck Smith and Taylor Greer. We are very inexperienced at RB. The offensive line may have the most experience and has decent size. Austin Collins, Andrew Donaldson and Joe Caron all have a year under their belts and will anchor the OL. Most kids have been very excited about DAY 4 (First day in pads!!! )

The first day of pads went as expected for the defensive line with some bright spots and some disappointments. The effort was great with a new group of starters. We need to learn to finish and learn that championships are won on the goal line.

The DB's were hit with some unexpected sickness. With Laconia Blake and Rodney Watson out the secondary was able to rebound and get some of the other guys work with the first group. Overall it was an up and down day, but we finished the day strong. We had some early busted coverage's, but we have shown an ability to be abe to cover.

The first day in pads is an eye opener for the younger players.  The speed of the game really picks up for them and playing real bodies rather than pads is always a shock for them.  Coach Talbot has done a great job prepping the D-Line in the weight room.  Three of his D-Linemen are bench pressing 375lbs or better and were putting that to use on the board drills and team periods.   As usual the Defense gets the better of the Offense early on in spring and yesterday was no exception.  I was proud of the way we responded and won the Goalline period at the end.  Here's hoping for a better second day of pads.

The intensity was was definitely there on the first day of pads. The defense seemed to be really coming after us. My guys did a great job on perimeter blocking and getting to the LB's at the point of attack.

The first day of full pads went very well for the linebackers and most of the defense. Jordan Jones, Quayshawn Nealy, and Will Lucas all had a very good day for the first day of pads. All of them ran around very well and were physical. Will probably had the best hit of the day in our middle drill period.

The Receivers are still working hard to pick up assignments after four days of practice. The weekend brought improvement reading coverage, the first day in pads brought some inconsistency catching balls. There are some battles starting to heat up at spots, particularly Tight End. Jamal Rodman, Javares McRoy, Kendrea Brewster and Willis Hardin seem to be emerging, but there is a competitive young group behind them led by Nick Goleno and Evin Reese.

The first day of practice went really well for the linebacking corp. We are really excited about all the players and having them contribute to the team in many ways. Time will tell but this group has a chance at being very good.

The first day of spring practice may be my most favorite day. The look on all of the new players faces are priceless when practice is over. Know one ever expects the intensity and fast pace that we keep. The running backs seem to be keeping pace. T minus two days till the first day of pads!!!

Jamal Rodman had a solid opening day of spring practice to pace the Receivers.  He ran good routes and made some nice catches.  Other notables that were consistent in the team period were returning varsity players Javares McRoy and Kendrea Brewster who consistently rotated with the first group along with Rodman.  There is a long way to go though as there were way too many drops early on in free release route running.  Late in the team period, newcomer Nick Goleno, got the offensive staff excited as he made a nice block springing Ben McRoy for a big gain around the left end.

The DL had a decent first day. The kids had a great attitude and worked extremely hard. It was still the first day and we still have a lot of work to do. It was good to get back to work, trying to put the 2007 season behind us and we are looking forward to 2008.

The first day of practice showed a lot of promise for the secondary. We have a young group with players that haven't had many starts, but have plenty of game experience. We have a chance to have a very strong secondary with big play capabilities.

With only two starters returning we are starting almost from scratch with a new group of O-Linemen this spring. Returning Left Guard Brenton Clayton is showing the younger players the way. THis spring will be fun and interesting for me as a Coach as we try to fit the pieces of the puzzle and the younger players seek to make a spot for themselves.

The first day was a big surprise for the JV Naughts. We anticipated we would have a total of 60-70 players for the spring with Teneroc HS opening. We opened the day with 88 players. All the coaches were excited with numbers. The JV Naughts have averaged over 100 players over the last 4 years during spring practice. Me and my staff was worried that Teneroc would really hurt the numbers of players that would e participating in spring practice. It was great to see numbers over 80. This made for a great first day!
