LHS to Play September TV Game in California

Polk County's football schedule for the 2009 season is set for public schools, and the Lakeland Dreadnaughts will be going to California after all. Lakeland will travel to play national powerhouse Concord (Calif.) De La Salle on either Friday, Sept. 25 or Saturday, Sept. 26. The date depends on when Paragon Marketing, which has organized the game, can arrange air time with ESPN for the game to be televised nationally.

Lakeland's Jones, Clayton Head State 5A List

The Dreadnaughts, who were the state runners-up this season, received eight total selections.The only school in the state with more was Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas, which had 10 and defeated Lakeland in the state title game. On the first team, Lakeland had Brenton Clayton (OL) and Jordan Jones (LB). On the second team were Caleb Pickrell (OL), Javares McRoy (WR) and Will Lucas (LB). Corey Swanson (OL) and Jarred Haggins (QB) were chosen for the third team, and Quayshawn Nealy (LB) was selected as an honorable mention.
Dreadnaught Player Passes Away
Cameron "Cam" Dominic Coffy, age 17, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2009 of acute myeloid leukemia. Born on April 9, 1992 in Charleston, S.C., he moved to Lakeland in 1997 from Indianapolis, IN. Cameron completed his sophomore year at Lakeland High School, where he was a starter and team leader with the Dreadnaughts football team and he also played basketball. When he was younger, he was actively involved with local football and basketball teams. Cameron is survived by his parents, Ranee Coffy Andesha and Mahmoud Andesha of Lakeland; brothers, Miguel Coffy of Tampa, Isiah Coffy, Mahmoud Andesha, and Adam Andesha, all of Lakeland
; grandfather, Michael Coffy of Winter Haven; and uncle, James Jones of Tampa. Family will receive friends on Thursday, July 2, 2009 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Lakeland Funeral Home, 2125 S. Bartow Road. A service will be held on Friday, July 3, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Lakeland Funeral Home, with interment to follow in Lakeland Memorial Gardens.

The Lakeland Dreadnaughts forced five turnovers and got 108 rushing yards from Rodney Watson to pull away from Tarpon Springs in a 24-3 spring classic victory Saturday in front of about 800 fans at Bryant Stadium.
After a sluggish first half, Lakeland controlled play in the second half. Watson ran for 70 yards on nine carries, and the defense held the to 103 yards in the final two quarters. "We got a little rhythm going there in the second half," Lakeland coach Bill Castle said.
The Dreadnaughts led, 10-3, after the first half, with their touchdown coming on a 13-yard slant pass from Jarred Haggins to Javares McRoy. Thomas Dietert also hit a 37-yard field goal toward the end of the first quarter. Click here for full article
