McRoy Brothers Pick Texas Tech

Brothers Ben and Javares McRoy got their wish. The Lakeland High School football stars committed to Texas Tech on Saturday where they'll get a chance to suit up in the same uniform once again. "We're going to enjoy our time in college together and spend time before we have to move on with our lives. We'll have another four years together," Javares said Sunday. The chance to be reunited after high school was the brothers' main focus in the recruiting process. The McRoys also had interest in the state from Florida, Florida State and South Florida. Javares said in the past that they were waiting to see if Florida would offer both of them scholarships, but Ben didn't receive one.

Plant Shuts Out Lakeland in Class 5A Semifinal By Brandt Merritt - The Ledger - 12/12 Having an NFL team in the neighborhood paid off for Tampa Plant on Friday night in a 20-0 victory over Lakeland that sent the Panthers to the Class 5A state championship game. James Wilder, Jr., son of the Bucs' all-time leading rusher, ran for 91 yards and a touchdown and safety Eric Dungy, son of former Bucs coach Tony Dungy, ended the Dreanaughts' last threat with a fourth-quarter interception. Plant (12-1) will play Bradenton Manatee in the championship game at Orlando's Citrus Bowl next Friday night. Manatee stunned top-ranked Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas, 28-20, in the other Class 5A semifinal.

3 Naughts Earn First-Team Honors

The Lakeland Dreadnaughts placed three players on the Class 5A All-State first team released Friday. Earning first-team honors were junior receiver Javares McRoy and senior linebackers Quayshawn Nealy and Will Lucas. Lucas already is enrolled at Purdue, while Nealy signed last week with Georgia Tech. McRoy has committed to Texas Tech.

Eight Sign Letters of Intent

From the Big Ten to the ACC to the Big 12, it won't be hard to find Lakeland Dreadnaughts playing in college next season. Eight Lakeland High seniors signed letters of intent on National Signing Day at a ceremony in the school gym Wednesday morning, five of them to Football Bowl Subdivision schools. Sending players to college on scholarship never gets old for Lakeland coach Bill Castle. "It's always huge for our school any time kids go off to college," Castle said.
